Cathyfly Delivers Her Verdict on Mink

I answered a query for long-time reader Cathyfly recently, about where to get an Essie manicure in Dublin. I recommended Mink in Donnybrook, and good lass that she is, off she went and tried it out, lickety-split. Miss CF hadn't had the best of times with nail salons, due, mostly to an acrylic nail fixation. The smell of the acrylic, the occasional third-degree burn after over-enthusiastic filing and the general back-breakingness of sitting prone for a long time all took its toll on her. But, she says, her dim view was challenged by her trip to Mink.

"After making a New Year’s resolution to take better care of my weak little nails and have regular manicures, I booked an appointment in Mink, as I was specifically looking for a salon that uses Essie nail polish. First impressions on visiting their website were good. www.mink.ie is a stylish website with the facility to book online – something I think more beauty and hair salons need to get to grips with these days. I was also impressed with their opening hours – until 8pm Monday to Wednesday and until 9pm on Thursdays & Fridays.

Given my less-than-healthy January bank balance, and the fact that I’d had a manicure less than 2 weeks previously, I had booked a Mini Manicure (€25). As soon as I walked through the doors of Mink I wished I had the time and the money to stay for a few hours and indulge in everything on the menu. No bright white lights or loud noises here – Mink is an interior design fan’s dream with really tasteful & luxurious décor and furniture. I was warmly welcomed by the receptionist and also by my therapist, Aneta. My mini-manicure lasted an hour and included very thorough filing and cuticle shaping, soaking, and the most precise and painstaking polish job my nails have ever been treated to. I left admiring my shiny vampish dark nails and promising to treat myself to the yummy-sounding White Chocolate and Cranberry pedicure (€75) as soon as pay day rolls around again.

Mink are obviously onto a winner – their prime location in the heart of D4 no doubt ensures them a well-heeled clientele, and they are soon to open a new salon in Ballsbridge. So as you’d expect, some of the treatments are pricey, but with the
standard of the surroundings and the service I experienced, I’d recommend Mink as one ‘nail bar’ worth splashing out on".
