I'll answer it - it's usually got something to do with money. The cold hard Euro, or indeed the herd of cattle out in the back field. But not always.
Here's the take on this question from the endlessly fascinating Freakanomics blog. Now they reckon, that according to research, it "may be a simple supply-and-demand issue: there are more beautiful women in the world than there are handsome men."
