Just as acceptable in the 80s: How to put a modern twist on old trends

Celebrities have been rocking some very familiar trends but decades apart. We’re here to show you how they’re giving old fashioned statements a modern twist.

We all know a lot of trends come back around (though thankfully not all). What your mum wore in her grad photos is suddenly a dead ringer for whatever J-Law has got on today. The world isn’t ending, though; you might have cringed for years that you used to wear that, but switch it up a bit and it’s back on trend. Who’d have thought that we’d be walking through town looking at teens in high-waisted 80's jeans?

Denim does it

Let’s start with double denim, a signature of the 90's. Now, I know just hearing those words will make most of us recoil in horror, but the likes of Gigi Hadid have proved you can still rock the look, just maybe a little differently to how we did it back in the day. By keeping the shades of denim slightly different she shows it can be flattering. A skinny jean will keep you from over-doing it.

Low low low low

Spilling out your top/dress with a low cut was also a hit. Just ask style queens Stella McCartney and Gwyneth Paltrow. This risqué red carpet cut has stayed in fashion, it’s just people are doing it a little different nowadays. A well-structured cut on your top half keeps it daring but not garish, á la Chery. .

Cover up your shoulders or legs if you’re going for the plunge - you also won’t be breaking out in a sweat every time a gust of wind comes.

The power suit with those staple shoulder pads might give you flashbacks to 80s fashion catalogues, but nowadays they don’t need to drown you. Keep it flattering with a tailored jacket and shoulder pads that let you fit through doors.

Claudia Schiffer was ahead of the times by wearing no top underneath, she could be wearing it today with the likes of Kristen Stewart who graced the red carpet in this a couple of weeks ago.

Let your frizz flag fly

While “a dodgy perm” has been used to describe some questionable high school photos, it turns out you can have a nice perm if you’re dedicated to keeping the frizz to a minimum.

RiRi made sure she stayed firmly in this century when she rocked hers in a statement red. It still isn’t an everyday look, but every so often it’s a great way to mix things up and give those straighteners a rest.
