Zara's sneakers that aren't sneakers are the shoes we need this May

Zara does it again and produces a little shoe gem that looks fashion but doesn't cost couture

Zara has overtaken Topshop as the most popular high street store, which will probably come as a surprise to no one. The Spanish brand (though it may get in trouble for it from time to time) makes designer-esque clothing for the 'ordinary' woman at just the right price. Topshop, on the other hand, continues to produce clothes for the cool crowd and its frankly ridiculous creations are putting consumers off.

What I like about Zara is that it stocks clothing that a huge variety of women can wear. Teenagers and those in their early twenties are not the target market, but of course, they can pull most of the pieces off. But then again, so can women in their fifties and sixties (and beyond). The pieces are meant to be mixed and matched, so one woman can wear, for example, this sequin tweed jacket one way, but another may have a completely different vision. The Chanel style makes it a classic piece that ladies can wear to lunch, but you can style it like Zara did and wear with a crop top and jeans for the opposite effect.

It's not the jacket I want to draw your attention to, though. It's this pair of sneakers that, er, aren't sneakers. Well, they are, but not in the traditional sense; they're gold, and they have a ruched elastic opening instead of laces, and they're wonderful.

They're 'fashion runners' which means you probably wouldn't actually run in them, but you can certainly wear with leggings. For changeable April/May weather, we'd style them with black skinny jeans, a white tee, a thin gold chain with a long overcoat slung over. These are the only shoes you'll need to run around town in, with a stop off for lunch and a drop-in to a friend.
