We've been talking about makeup looks for the festive season recently and although I'm not planning many mad nights out myself this year, it did start me reminiscing about the excitement of leaving work to head straight into town or off to a Christmas party.
When going straight out from the office, I don't usually bother completely redoing my makeup. Instead I plan in advance and start with a work-friendly look that I can then touch up and add to for going out. And although I'm not really a head-to-toe shimmer and glitter kind of girl, it isn't Christmas without a bit of sparkle.
My favourite way to add subtle sparkle that is noticeable without going over the top is a recent discovery. It's so simple that I'm kicking myself for not trying it earlier - this takes just a few seconds to do and transforms an office-appropriate eye into a party look with style. I start with a swoosh of dark liner (I personally love navy gel liner, but this works with any colour) for my daytime look and then come evening I apply a sparkly liquid liner over the top.

I've been using Dianne Brill Liquid Eyeliner in Lace Diamonds, which is a silvery-toned liner with very fine multi-faceted shimmer that is perfect for a little flash of sparkle every time I bat my lashes - the base colour on this looks almost clear over the dark liner, so you only notice the sparkle when the light catches it. I find applying this from the centre of the eye to the outer corner of the line keeps the look subtle, but you could also apply along the length of the eyeline and into the inner corner if you really want to shine.
This look would also work with metallic liners - instead of applying this over the dark liner, apply the metallic liner neatly just above it on the outer corner for a flash of colour each time you blink.
Now - who's up for a rousing chorus of Fairytale of New York?
