Tight-lining - what exactly is it and should you do it?

Tight-lining is a technique that is easy to master and can be really effective in creating a smouldering smokey eye

If you were around in the '90s and 2000s you will have been great pals with your black kohl pencil. I used to actually take a lighter to my kohl pencil before applying it to my eye line to achieve intense black liner. This is definitely not a technique I recommend as it could easily lead to disaster.

My novice and dangerous technique was basically a method of tight-lining. Tight lining is the art of applying a kohl liner, usually black, in the waterline under your upper lash line as well as in the lower waterline. It gives you a complete black frame to your eyes; the black goes the whole way around leaving no gaps for pinky skin to show through. It's a good way to make you look like you have nice full lashes if you aren't naturally blessed with them.

Place a mirror on the table in front of you. Looking downwards into the mirror, lift the upper lashes. Start lining at the outer corner of the eye, simply pushing your liner into the base of the lashes.

When should you tight-line?

'Does lining my eyes like this make them look smaller?' you ask. In short, the answer is yes but there's nothing wrong with that. If you are doing an eye makeup look specifically to make your eyes appear bigger, then don't use this technique. However, this technique works really well with a dark smokey eye. If you are looking to create the darkest, sexy-ist, most smouldering smokey eye ever-then this is the technique to bring your smokey eye to the next level. Tight lining will make your look look finished.
