How to get your glow back

If your skin is in serious need of a detox after Christmas we have four simple steps to help you get your usual glow back.

Is anybody else finding it hard to get back into the healthy eating buzz after Christmas? It's like all the fun has to end and everything gets boring. I, for one, am struggling to put down the chocolate, give up the wine and get back to the gym. The only issue is that my skin is looking tired, grey and I have dark circles under my puffy eyes. Those signs mean that your skin needs some attention. If you want to do a skin detox after Christmas you don't have to go on a crazy, strict plan. These are four things you can do to gently detox your skin.

Drink water

You can shlap on as much moisturiser as you want but if you're not drinking enough water your skin will remain dehydrated. A lot of the visible lines on your face are due to dehydration or at least made worse by it. In fact, lines are often referred to as 'dehydration lines'. Aim to drink two litres of water a day for optimum hydration.

Take omegas

Taking omegas and including oily fish in your diet will also do wonders for your skin. Omegas help to strengthen the skin's barrier. A strong healthy barrier helps your skin to retain water. So, if you're not getting enough fatty acids, it's almost redundant to be drinking lots of water because your skin can't hold onto it.

Cut the sugar

Sugar is the devil for your skin. It wreaks all sorts of havoc with your skin. It causes inflammation, breakouts and uneven skin tone. Basically, eating sugar speeds up the ageing process in your skin which we want to avoid at all costs. sugar is fine in moderation so you can still take some sugar in your diet. Unfortunately, you need to stick to natural sugars found in fruit and some veg so we all need to put down the chocolate bars and pick up an orange.

Eat your greens

Peas, broccoli, spinach, kale, asparagus, rocket - yes all the greens. They do wonders for your skin. Green leafy vegetables are packed with vitamins and protein. They are basically as super as food gets for your body and for your skin. Increasing your green intake will keep you fuller for longer. You are also filling up on the good stuff so you eat less of the bad stuff. Aim to have 50% green on your plate with each meal and then fill the other half of your plate with your carbs or protein choice. Feeding your skin with the good stuff on the inside is the fastest way to getting your glow back on the outside.
