Common wedding day makeup fears and how to ease them

Do you have any wedding day makeup fears? It's totally normal to be apprehensive about your bridal makeup look because it's so important to get it right.

For your wedding day, two of the first things on the checklist are to book a hair stylist and makeup artist. This is unknown territory to lots of ladies. And even when it isn't, even if you get your hair and makeup done all the time there are still bound to be wedding day makeup fears. Like, will I hate my wedding makeup? What if it's not as nice as it was for that last wedding I went to? What if I regret wearing red lipstick? Then, there's skin. What if I get really shiny? What if I cry my makeup off? What if I hate my pictures? It's normal to have these worries, of course you want to look your very best on your wedding day.

My advice is to ask yourself what your worst fears are and tell the glam squad. That way you can be sure they will pay extra attention to that particular issue. If you're worried about having stress spots on the day, say so. Or if it's that you're worried you'll cry your makeup off, tell the makeup artist. There might just be a simple solution to your problem. Don't forget there have been millions of brides ahead of you so the MUAs and hairdressers have come up against every issue before.

Here are a few worries answered that we have come up against this wedding season:

Q: My skin is so oily what if I get really shiny on the day?

A: Your makeup artist can prep your skin before the foundation to help prevent shine using something like Benefit Porefessional or MAC Skin Refined Zone. They will powder it really well. Your makeup artist might do your makeup a couple of hours before you want to be ready so they can check you over before you put on your dress. This gives them a chance to see where shine is developing and correct it. Ideally, you should bring a foundation powder compact in your wedding clutch bag to powder your nose throughout the day.

Q: Should you wear red lipstick on your wedding day?

Red lipstick on a bride is a beautiful look. It is classic and looks beautiful in pictures. When a bride asks this question I think the answer is simple. If you often wear red lipstick and have tried and tested the look then you could certainly choose it for your wedding day. However, if you have never in your life worn red lipstick, it is a definite no! A red lip is a statement look and if you have never worn it before you will think you look like a different person with it on. Your wedding makeup is forever immortalised in your wedding photos. You do not want to look back at them and not recognise the person in the pictures.

Q: Will I need to top up my makeup throughout the day?

When you have your makeup applied professionally by a makeup artist you should only need minimal touch-ups throughout the day. Your eye makeup shouldn't budge. I always advise brides to bring just a compact powder foundation and their lipstick to top up. The powder foundation will get rid of shine but it will also give you coverage. If you are a face-toucher, makeup tends to disappear around the nose and chin area. You can use a sponge to powder these areas which will even out any redness appearing later in the day. Lipstick is practically impossible to get to stay put for a long period of time so you will probably need to touch it up after eating and drinking.

Q: What if I cry my makeup off?

If you know you are going to be emotional on your wedding day and there is a good chance of tears, definitely tell your makeup artist. You need to have a tissue handy for that walk up the aisle. It's an overwhelming moment for lots of brides. You can often hide a tissue in the neckline of your dress but if you have nowhere to put it make sure your bridesmaids have one ready for you when you reach the top. Catching the tears is imperative to saving your makeup. If you do have a good cry, you will probably need to bring extras in your top up kit. You could add concealer and bronzer so you can touch up your cheeks.

If you do have any worries your makeup artist should be able to give you a solution. We recommend meeting with your makeup artist and having a trial run at least three months before the big day. This is your chance to talk through what you want to look like on your wedding day and have a practice run. What other wedding day makeup fears do you brides-to-be have?
