How often should you be using a face mask?

Is any pamper party complete without a face mask? They come in an array of styles and all give something unique to your skin.

Face masks are a great way to stay on top of your skincare. The right one can help keep your skin hydrated, remove dead skin cells and also remove any hidden dirt or oils left on your skin. They can help rid your skin of impurities and also improve the look of your pores.

But how often should you really be using a face mask?

The general rule of thumb is 1 to 3 times per week. There are some masks that can be used daily like an ultra-hydrating mask but it all depends on the mask and your skin type.

Sensitive Skin

If your skin is sensitive, you should always be careful with what you are putting on it. You can use a hydrating mask daily. Avoid masks that contain fragrance or any chemicals. DIY masks are a great option for sensitive skin.

Dry Skin

Hydrating masks are fantastic if you suffer from dry skin. Hydrating masks are usually made up of mostly water, meaning they shouldn’t irritate the skin. You can use a hydrating mask 3 to 4 times a week.

Oily Skin

If your skin is oily or acne prone, clay or charcoal masks will work wonders for you. But you should only use them once or twice a week. Masks tailored specifically for acne will almost always contain salicylic acid which could cause irritation if used daily, Once or twice a week is best for these masks too.

Mature Skin

Mature skin, unfortunately, does not retain elasticity as well as more youthful skin. If you have mature skin, you should use a hydrating and toning face mask. Some masks are tailored for mature skin and contain anti-ageing properties. However, only use them twice a week.

The biggest advice you should take from this is to listen to your skin. Your skin ‘type’ can change throughout the seasons and throughout your life and what you may need in a face mask now might be different in a year. Listen to your skin and when in doubt speak to a professional.

Skin wise there is no time better than another so depending on your routine you can do either. Some masks work better overnight as you can leave them on and reap the full benefits.
