6 Things To Remember If You're Trying To Get Over A Crush

Unfortunately, crushes aren't just for teenagers - you have to deal with them as an adult too and if things don't go well, they can be heartbreaking. So if you're trying to get over a crush at the moment here are 6 things you need to remember.

Before we get into the advice, the only way to properly get over a crush is to actually let them know how you feel.

Assuming the feelings aren't mutual and accepting defeat will ensure you don't get over your crush anytime soon.

I've been there so I know it's terrifying but not knowing is worse. Once you let them know how you feel you'll then be able to move on whether that's with or without them.

1. There's nothing wrong with you.

It's normal to feel like you're the problem initially when you get rejected but it's very important to realise that you're not.

It's tough when your crush doesn't like you back but that does not mean that there's something wrong with you.

Everyone's version of an attractive person is different so don't dismiss yourself just because you may not match up with theirs.

Chances are there are lots of other people out there that will think you're gorgeous and will like you for you.

2. It's best to stop talking to them for a while.

If you're good friends with your crush then continuing to talk to them as if nothing happened is a bad idea.

You need to give yourself space to get over the crush and constant contact is only going to prolong that process.

I recommend unfollowing them for a while on social media too.

3. Give yourself time to heal.

Even though you weren't in a relationship with them, you're not going to get over them instantly, so don't expect yourself to.

Allow yourself whatever time is necessary to heal, if you've had the crush for a while then it's going to take you longer to get over it.

4. Stop idealizing your crush.

The worst thing you can do is continue to idealize your crush, that's not going to help you get over them.

As strange as it sounds the best way to get over them is to make a list of all of their bad qualities and reasons why it would never have worked anyway.

Keep this list close so the next time you start thinking of them you can look at it and remember why it's best it didn't work out.

5. Distraction is key.

The best way to get over a crush is to keep yourself busy.

If you have too much free time you're going to keep thinking of them so focus on your hobbies, family and friends instead.

6. Focus on what you've learned from the experience.

Just because it didn't work out doesn't mean it was a waste of time.

Try to focus on the positive things you can take from the experience.

Being able to take control of the situation and be straight forward about your feelings is a great life lesson to learn.

It's a skill you can use for the rest of your life.
