Great places to go for a last minute pre-Christmas getaway

Before the real madness begins, now's actually a good time to go for a last minute pre-Christmas getaway.

Unless someone is throwing an inconvenient winter wedding, this time of year is not at all bad for getting away from it all. Most people use the weekends in December to do Christmas things like meeting up with different friend groups and decorating the tree. So, even though you might think it's a busy time of year for weekend getaways, you would be surprised by how much space hotels have at this time of year.

If you find yourself with a randomly free weekend, quick! Grab your other half, mammy, bestie, whoever, and book yourselves some R&R before silly season really begins. You for sure won't regret it.

Powerscourt Hotel Resort & Spa

The absolutely gorgeous Powerscourt Hotel, situated right in the heart of Wicklow has plenty of packages to choose from including the 2 Night ESPA Escape which includes two nights’ accommodation with breakfast, dinner on one evening in the SIKA restaurant and a 50 minute ESPA treatment per person. For Christmas, Powerscourt also offers the Christmas Sparkle Afternoon Tea in partnership with Boodles, if you just want to head out for some indulgence for the day.

Kelly's Hotel

I stayed here four years ago and had the best pre-Christmas weekend ever. Kelly's is known for being a home away from home. When I was there, countless families were there too, enjoying themselves and having a very festive time altogether. The atmosphere is so friendly, too. It's not just any family-friendly hotel, though; it has one of the best hotel restaurants there is, and it has an art collection you could spend hours observing.

Galmont Hotel

Formerly the Radisson Blu, the Galmont is Galway's newest hotel and spa. It's situated literally smack bang in the middle of the city, but that doesn't matter in this case. You'll just want to enjoy the view of Lough Atalia, go to the spa and enjoy some casuals in the bar.

Dunboyne Castle

If you live in Dublin, Dunboyne Castle is the gift that keeps on giving. It is SO close to the city - only a twenty-minute drive - but it's in Meath, situated in lovely woodland. The spa is gorgeous; the rooms are so comfy and, again, the food is top class. I stayed there and had the best sleep ever, read about it here.

Inchydoney Island Lodge and Spa

Situated in West Cork, Inchydoney Island Lodge and Spa is a literal oasis away from the hustle and bustle of real life. From the moment you arrive, you're looked after (the welcome drink is such a lovely touch). With gorgeous views, beach walks, good food and drink options and plenty of cosy nooks and crannies, you won't want to go home.

What do you do to unwind before Christmas? Or is there simply not enough time for that craic?
