Gal Gadot opens up about Wonder Woman's bisexuality

Wonder Woman can easily be described as one of the most iconic comic-book characters ever created.

She's certainly the most recognisable female comic-book character, after Catwoman and Supergirl, so it's a little infuriating that it's taken THIS long to finally see a film where the character is involved. More recently, however, Wonder Woman made headlines for being confirmed as bisexual by long-time writer Greg Rucka.

In an interview with Variety, Gal Gadot was asked about the reveal and whether it was discussed during the production of the upcoming film. "It’s not something we’ve explored. It never came to the table, but when you talk theoretically about all the women on Themyscira and how many years she was there, then what he said makes sense. In this movie, she does not experience any bisexual relationships."

"But it’s not about that. She’s a woman who loves people for who they are. She can be bisexual. She loves people for their hearts," said Gadot.

In fairness, it does make sense on a completely practical level that both Themyscira and Wonder Woman are not heteronormative. As long-time Wonder Woman writer Greg Rucka explained, Themyscira is "supposed to be paradise. You’re supposed to be able to live happily. You’re supposed to be able - in a context where one can live happily, and part of what an individual needs for that happiness is to have a partner - to have a fulfilling, romantic and sexual relationship. And the only options are women."

"But an Amazon doesn’t look at another Amazon and say, 'You’re gay.' They don’t. The concept doesn’t exist."

Little by little, bisexual and queer relationships on-screen are becoming more common in mainstream blockbusters. Independence Day: Resurgence, for example, featured a loving relationship between two male scientists whilst rumours surrounded Finding Dory that two background characters were lesbians.

It should come as no shock, then, that Wonder Woman is a bisexual character. What do you make of it? Let us know in the comments!
