Sweet Like Chocolate: Our Guide to AW15's Shade of Choice

Sweet Like Chocolate: Our Guide to AW15's Shade of Choice

When it comes to a reliable colour in fashion, black has always been our go-to. Then we had navy for Autumn Winter 2014 which also flowed into Spring Summer, and now we have a new shade. It's all about brown.

I first set my eyes on the new season brown when I saw H&M's Studio Collection for the first time a couple of months ago. It had a soft shade of brown that got me thinking on how we could style this colour. It comes in lots of variations from lighter, almost tan colours, to deep chocolate.

It is actually a lot more versatile than black and works as a good base for colour blocking.

So let's have it! How can we style it, and what are the best bits?

Millie Makintosh

Texture is a great and easy way to style brown. Take a look at Made in Chelsea lady, Millie Macintosh who has been seen wearing brown mini dresses on more than one occasion over the summer.

You may also have seen an influx of brown and light brown mini a-line skirts on the high street as part of the 70s mega trend. Skirts are a great way to try the trend, as you can wear neutrals like cream and ivory with it to lighten it up in the early days of Autumn, or try a darker shade of brown to colour block within the same palette.

If wearing the trend on yourself is not for you, then try your feet.

Shoes and boots are a good way to experiment with a colour you may not wear too often. The thing about brown boots for winter are their endless ways to wear. If you like knee-highs, try these with a cream midi skirt for a boho-feel, or wear over skinny jeans which is a timeless style that you can wear well into spring.

I also like a brown boot with paisley print dresses or a vintage tea dress to contrast the flowing, feminine look of patterns that tend to be floral.

Or take a styling tip from Karen Millen and try a denim culotte with brown suede? This looks is oh so seventies, and I have to admit one of my favourite lookbook images from a brand this season.
