5 top tips from the nutritionist

When I went to see a nutritionist lately I was prepared for a very stern critique of my eating habits, a la Gillian McKeith. However that didn’t happen at all: this is what she told me:

  1. ALWAYS eat breakfast. And it must be something substantial - don’t think that apple eaten on the bus will do. Or that Special K bar scoffed at your desk. No you must have a bowl of sugar free cereal or muesli, or a couple of slices of wholemeal toast plus a fruit juice.
  2. Tea and coffee aren’t a sin. Just don’t have gallons of them. Ditto alcohol. Ditto Diet Coke. What a relief!
  3. Eat your five a day - and make it more veg than fruit based.
  4. Watch your portion sizes. Cheese portions no bigger then a matchbox, protein no bigger than a pack of cards.
  5. Don’t diet. Don’t binge. You can eat most things in moderation. Stick to a low GI plan because that’s the most healthy.
