As you get older, you inevitably start to look older. But these five ways to make your skin appear younger are backed by science. So they must work!

The bottom line is that genetics play a huge role in how you look and especially in the ageing process. That being said, it doesn't mean all is lost. There are certain things you can be doing to help you along the way and to keep your skin the best condition it can be in.

Here are five healthy habits, backed by science, to help form the foundation of great skin.

Hydration

The amount of water you drink can determine the elastin and texture of your skin tissue. A lot of fine lines we notice on the skin can be down to dehydration. Try drinking your daily requirement of two litres per day for a month and monitor how your skin changes.

Sleep

Your skin cells rejuvenate when you sleep. If you struggle with sleep, try to cut out the caffeine after 2 pm, don't eat after 6 pm, go to bed early and switch off all your devices. Read a book instead of using your phone in bed.

Diet

Diet plays a huge role in keeping your skin looking young. Making sure you have the right vitamins, minerals, collagen, antioxidants etc. is so important. You can even choose your diet specifically to enrich your skin, if you were that serious about it. But, in general, ensuring that you eat your vegetables, especially greens, have a well-balanced diet, take a good supplement and antioxidants you will be doing well.

Exercise

Scientists have established through biopsies of skin samples that regular activity even later in life can help minimise the signs of ageing. Even just doing an hour a week can make all the difference, so try to start there and add to it as you grow.

Skincare Routine

A lot of people don't know their skin type. If that is the case, it's impossible to know what your skincare routine should be. Finding what works for you is trial and error but when you do stick to it. Skin loves retinol, peptides and zinc in products and also to have a proper routine. Exfoliate at least once a week, make sure you never go to bed with makeup on and moisturise well.

With these in mind, you will be starting the year off as you intend to finish it - with excellent skin!
