Handy to Know: The Foods To Eat If You Want To Lose Weight

New research from the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition has shown that there are a few foods that we should aim to include more of in our diets if we want to lose weight.

When it comes to losing weight or gaining weight, there's a lot of information to take in; from fad diets to recipes and exercise regimes, it can all get a bit confusing, but a new study that looked at the diets of 16,000 Americans across a period of 16 years showed that there are a few general rules that will make things that little bit easier.

According to the findings, those whose diets contained more starch and carbohydrates gained more weight (nothing hugely surprising there), but that those who had diets high in "yogurt, peanut butter, walnuts, other nuts, chicken without skin, low-fat cheese, and seafood" gained less weight.

One of the most interesting findings was about low-fat or non-fat dairy products, and how they had a negative effect on weight loss. The study showed that those who ate those products actually overcompensated by eating more of other foods, in particular carbohydrates, which lead to weight gain: "In fact, when people consumed more low-fat dairy products, they actually increased their consumption of carbs, which may promote weight gain. This suggests that people compensate, over years, for the lower calories in low-fat dairy by increasing their carb intake".

The study also found that making smaller adjustments to your diet would have a better result than any of the fads that are out there at the moment, but sure we could have told you that. Less scientifically of course, but we could have.
