How to stop your décolletage from premature ageing

Your décolletage is the area under your neck and between your breasts. Though often overlooked, in reality, it needs extra daily care and attention.

That’s because the skin of your décolleté is thinner and has fewer oil glands than the skin on other areas of your body, so it’s more likely to become dry due to a lack of natural hydration— which means wrinkles can easily form.

In addition, we often forget to put suncream on this area, and if we wear shirts with V-necks or that have a few buttons undone, well, skin damage can occur. Unfortunately, there are no effective treatments to address a dry, damaged, and wrinkled décolleté, so prevention is essential.

Most of us have been cleansing and moisturising since we started to wear make-up but how many pay attention to our chest? Forgetting to apply SPF and neglecting to nourish it can result in premature ageing quicker than you'd imagine.

Here's why and how to care for your décolletage.

The décolletage is often one of the first places to show signs of ageing

The majority of sun damage is done in childhood/teens/early adult including the décolletage area. The skin around your chest and neck is very thin- it contains less sebaceous glands and limited melanocytes (cells that give colour to your skin and protect it from UV rays) – so damage is more easily done.

Not applying SPF is irreversible

Your chest area is one of the most UV exposed areas of the body and therefore suffers harsh sun damage when exposed over time. To combat this be sure to wear broad spectrum sunscreen when your neck or chest is uncovered. This is a must even in cloudy weather – those rays will still be damaging you.

'Sleep wrinkles' are a thing

Do you generally sleep on your side? Apparently curling up on your side can also speed up chest wrinkles and have a sagging effect. Try to get off to sleep when lying on your back.

Most of us forget to cleanse that area properly

Most of us have some sort of a cleansing, nighttime routine. But we often forget this important area. When cleaning and moisturising extend it all down. It is a great habit to get into. You will thank us later!

The special skin there has special needs

The skin of the décolletage has some unique attributes that require special care. It is a high histamine response area, and thus red flushing can occur, so it is important to choose a skin care product that is free of fragrance.
