Zooey Deschanel: why she's our Beaut.ie Girl Crush 2012

Ah, Zooey Deschanel. Indie hipster dreamgirl, quirky songstress, possessor of World's Most Enviable Fringe and cute as a goddamn button. She's the official Beaut.ie Girl Crush of 2012 and has been keeping rather busy of late. She set up Hello Giggles with two of her friends, she's the saucer-eyed face of Rimmel, she's chattering to Siri in an iPhone 4S ad, she's been a tremendously good sport while hosting Saturday Night Live and also lights up our telly screens as Jess in New Girl.

Her style is cute and fun in real life (tuxedo nails at the Golden Globes anyone?) so Jess's wardrobe doesn't seem all that far removed from what Zooey would wear herself. I think every time I watch an episode I vow to organise my wardrobe properly and buy all the flippy polkadot dresses in the WORLD. Also, as a hopeless heel-wearer, I love that Jess appears to live in flat shoes. And that magnificent mane of hair she has is just supernaturally amazing.

Earlier this year she was included in People magazine's "Most Beautiful" issue and photographed without makeup. And...SURPRISE! She's still a total knockout. Well of course she is, she's made of unicorns, rainbows and ukulele music, after all.

However, her kookiness has proved to be divisive. While some (myself included) think her wide-eyed and quirky antics are adorable, others find her infuriatingly twee. Her recent stint on Saturday Night Live has proved that she's well able to laugh at herself though, as she gamely played along beside a hilarious send-up of herself. When asked about incidents of Zooey-backlash, she was quoted in an interview as saying "I can't be girly? I think the fact that people are associating being girlie with weakness, that needs to be examined. I don't think that it undermines my power at all." And she's right. I think we could all agree that liking girly things doesn't mean you can't be a badass who gets stuff done.
