L'Oréal's Sunkiss Jelly: Great Way to Get Highlights at Home or Simply Sun-In in Disguise?

It's with an air of caution that I approach anything that sells itself on its 'gradual lightening' ability, but when trying out L'Oréal's Casting Sunkiss Jelly, I needn't have applied it as though I was handling acid. It's actually graaaand.

Now I've only used it twice so far, so I'll have to go a little further to give you proper before and after pics, but I can report that I did notice a slight lift in my natural tones after just two uses. This product is getting thumbs up all over the beautyosphere so maybe, just maybe, we're onto one of those products that actually does what it says here.

If you've got dark hair, you may as well save yourself the €12.79 on this and fork out for a set of actual highlights but if you've got more middle of the road tones through your locks, with caramels, light browns and a few blondes like me, this product may give you the lightening results you're after. L'Oréal suggest we think of this product less as a lightener and more so as 'a burst of sunshine'.

Putting its 'sun technology' aside for a moment, it's worth pointing out that this jelly feels gorgeous on your hair, and it smells all kinds of ridey as well.

Usually with anything that's peroxide based, you expect it to smell a lot more clinical. So whether you notice a change in colour or not, you'll certainly notice that your hair is soft (thanks to the camellia seed oil which works as a deadly conditioning agent), super shiny and sweet-smelling.

So how easy is this product to use? The answer is very

  • You can apply it all over to non coloured, dry or wet hair, for a natural lightened look. Or if you are going for ombré, you can apply directly on lengths for highlights.
  • No need to rinse, just leave it in.
  • For a more intense result, you can blast it with some heat from your hairdryer.
  • Alternatively, bring this on your holibobs and let the sun do the work.

Have you tried L'Oréal's Sunkiss Jelly? Would be tempted to give it a go as a cheaper alternative to highlights/ombré in the hairdresser? Or it bringing back memories of the dreaded Sun-In and the neon orange mop that you rocked in the Gaeltacht circa 1999?
