Glass Skin: What is it and how do we get it?

Glass skin is the latest buzz word in the world of beauty. But what it is? And how do we get it?

Glass skin is one of the big new trends in the world of beauty. But what does it mean? How do you get it? And where did the idea even come from? Also, isn't it enough that we're still on working on perfecting our dewy skin techniques? Fear not, all those questions and more shall be answered. Let's just say, skincare is the key to everything, but failing that you can always cheat... a little.

What is glass skin?

So, what is glass skin? In a nutshell, it refers to a complexion that looks so healthy, hydrated and glowing that it's almost translucent. Like crystal (or, er, glass). Basically, it's dewy skin turned up a few notches. On paper that sounds easy to achieve but in reality, the whole effect can be quite complicated depending on who you're talking to. The good news is as I mentioned above, it doesn't necessarily have to be.

Where did the idea come from?

As with a lot of beauty trends (such as sheet masks, rubber masks, BB Creams, skin essences etc), the origins of glass skin can be traced back to the K-Beauty (aka Korean beauty) scene. Seen worldwide as leaders in skincare technology and techniques, what the K-Beauty gurus say is taken as gospel. And glass skin is definitely a thing.

How do you get it?

This is where things can get a little complicated. You see technically, the trick to creating glass skin relies on layers, and layers of light skincare. There's no cheating when it comes to skin in the K-Beauty world!

The seven-step routine is famous and involves a multitude of products such as AHA exfoliators, cleansers, toners, skin boosters, essences etc. Each step is designed to smooth out the complexion, improve texture and then give the skin a fine veil of moisture. Follow it all and you'll be rewarded with ultra hydrated, glowing skin. Of course, it helps if you have it naturally, too (doesn't it always?)

Can you cheat it?

If you're strapped for time, or simply can't be bothered going through a lengthy skincare routine there are ways to cheat glass skin. First, start by exfoliating your skin so it's nice and smooth. Then massage in a little facial oil, or alternatively a hydrating cream moisturiser such as Weleda Skin Food.

Light foundations such as MAC Face & Body or Tom Ford Traceless are ideal for creating a light, dewy veil on the skin initially. But to create that glass-like finish, tap some shiny lip balm or a lipgloss onto cheekbones, brow bone and nose. Do that, and you'll have glass skin in no time at all.
