Study shows couples who drink together, stay together

Love is....putting your partner's happiness before your own? Making sacrifices and compromises? Nope, tequila, that's what.

2,767 couples (who had been married for an average of 33 years) were interviewed in The Journals of Gerontology Series B: Psychological Series studyAnd it would appear that sharing a drink is one of the keys to a happy marriage, with the study concluding that of the those questioned "wives who reported drinking alcohol reported decreased negative marital quality over time when husbands also reported drinking".

So sharing tequila with your loved one means that you have a better chance of staying together (albeit possibly as two very hungover people, trapped in a never ending cycle of vicious arguments over whose turn it is to go buy the Dioralyte and make the tea).

But the flip side is also true - if both partners drank less or abstained, they also reported decreased negative marital quality over time. So it's all about finding your Mojito match; the amount of alcohol that people consumed was less important than whether both partners had the same habit of drinking or abstaining.

So drink responsibly and if all comes to all, you can always just share a glass of wine with your cat.
