Brazilian Blowout Update: HSE Requests That it be Recalled

brazilian blowout recalled

Earlier in the week we dug deep into the chemically-suspicious heart of the Brazilian Blowout in the wake of the controversy that surrounded it as a result of testing in the US.

Touted as the new keratin/12 week/permanent blowdry treatment, the product claimed as its point of difference the fact it doesn't contain formaldehyde. Oregon Health & Science University’s Center for Research on Occupational and Environmental Toxicology (OSHA), begged to differ, and while the company themselves insist the product is safe, the Irish Health Service Executive (HSE) isn't so sure either.

The HSE has asked that the product be recalled, and the product's Irish distributor, Xpert, is complying with the request. You can see their statement below and as far as we're concerned, this is a really positive move for the health and safety of both salon staff and consumers.

STATEMENT FROM XPERT PROFESSIONAL HAIR CARE

In compliance with a request from the HSE, Xpert Professional Hair Care has announced that it will recall the in-salon treatment solution known as Brazilian Blowout, for which it is the distribution agent. Xpert Professional has confirmed that the HSE’s concerns centre around the levels of formaldehyde contained in the solution and although Xpert notes that the solution has met very stringent standards in the United States, the company will, of course, comply with any request from the HSE. Accordingly, Xpert is immediately notifying every stockist of the product recall and will not distribute the Brazilian Blowout solution until such time as any issues between the HSE and the manufacturers – who deny that their product contains any formaldehyde – have been resolved. Xpert would like to stress that the concerns expressed refer only to the in-salon solution and the Acai aftercare products are not the subject of any concerns or tests.

Statements and further details are available from the manufacturers of Brazilian Blowout and can be viewed on their website www.brazilianblowout.com.
