When is the Right Time to Get a Hair Cut?

You know that moment when you grab a chunk of your own hair, hold it against the light and see that every single strand is split? That's when I know that my hair needs a cut.

I am very bad at letting my hair grow out. Grow out of control that is. I'm pinching those pennies at the moment and hair styling is a luxury I can't afford. Well, I can, but only when I go back to my home town in The West where it costs half the price than in Dublin, where I live, for the same quality.

Over the past while I've come to realise, reluctantly, that your hairstyle can really make or break your overall look and well tended to tresses can instantly up your style credentials whether you're dressed head to toe in Prada or Penneys. They don't call it your crowning glory for nothing, I suppose.

I got my hair cut (back West) a couple of weeks ago and even though it's in such bad condition that I'm still finding strands of hair that have split five times, it's the style that makes the difference. I don't know about you but when my hair goes from witch to wonderful in a matter of minutes I feel like a weight has been lifted. And it's not just because of all the thinning out that's going on.

Hair pros recommend getting a trim every 6-8 weeks but some people let and can let their hair grow out for much longer without it breaking or splitting or looking dull. Others rather get a trim in a much shorter span. Then there's the whole fringe question - can you do it yourself or do you run down to your local salon every couple of weeks to get that sorted? Another thing to bring into question is whether or not you colour your hair (if you do you should check out our pick of the best products for coloured hair) and then there's the matter of at home up-keep. Hairy business it certainly is.

How often do you get your hair cut? What's the longest length of time you've gone without a cut?
