Three causes of adult acne that might surprise you

Did you manage to get through your teenage years spot free only to get to your 30s and develop adult acne? You are not alone.

Adult acne is slowly becoming more and more prevalent in our society. It can happen from many causes, some of which can come as a surprise to you. When you are almost sure you are doing all the right things, and your skin just won't clear up the stress alone can make it worse.

The three reasons why you might be breaking out are:

  • Hormonal Imbalance

Hormones are a huge factor towards adult acne. The fact of the matter is that a huge amount of your daily toxic load could be part of your main problem. We use a huge amount of products on a daily basis, from perfumes to makeup, household cleaning products to toothpaste. Many of these contain shelf-life prolonging chemicals which, unfortunately, can alter our hormone levels. This, in turn, can lead to adult acne.

Be aware of the ingredients in products you use, and do your research. Just because it is marketed to clear the skin, doesn't mean it will.

  • Stress

These days, most people seem to be living to work instead of working to live. The stress of having to work so much can adjust our hormone levels also. In times of stress, your adrenal gland produces the stress hormone cortisol to help your body deal with it. Unfortunately, a tiny bit of testosterone leaks out with it. For a woman, this male hormone can drive the oil glands to produce more oil which is the root cause of breakouts.

  • Incorrect product choices

Choosing the wrong products for your skin type can be detrimental. With so many products on the market, it can be very difficult to know what will suit you. If you have oily or combination skin and are prone to breakouts, you should be using skin care products labelled "oil-free," "noncomedogenic," or "water-based. This way you can make sure you aren't clogging your pores and causing further congestion.
