Manssentials: Essential Guide to Easy Skincare for Himself

In general, Irish men are awful eejits when it comes to sun care. The sun goes right to their heads and they go a bit mad, soaking up some Vitamin D with handkerchiefs on their heads.

They also tend to forget about skincare in general. But times they are a-changin' and our men folk are beginning to peruse the skincare aisle with interest. So we've put together a quick guide to the essentials that they'll need for keeping their skin right as rain in the summer weather.

And if your fella/brother/friend/super cool Grandad is headed to a festival, playing a bit of football for the afternoon or is off on holidays soon, you might just want to print this off and stick it do the fridge.

Introducing our Manssentials:

Suntan lotion

It can be a pain to carry around and an annoyance to apply, so Nivea’s Protect & Refresh spray is the lazy man’s solution. The refresh in the title is also a very welcome blast of freshness on the particularly warm days, as we know that they can get a bit sweaty in the heat….

Mansturiser

A skin care regime is important for men of any age, and making sure he slathers it on regularly will help him to look more like George Clooney and less like Troy McClure as the years go on.

Kiehl’s is a brand that gentlemen should trust, not only because they give their products manly names like 'Facial Fuel' and use masculine colours on their packaging, but also because they've been at this for decades and know what they're doing. They make products that are specifically for men and their regime, rather than redesigned from the female equivalent. Men and women  have very different skin, and so need different products (show him this next time he tries to borrow your expensive stuff from the bathroom cabinet). That's why he should check out the Oil Eliminator range, perfect for the summer.

The Oil Eliminator range helps to get rid of that shine that oily skin produces and reduces the amount of sweat that appears too. The range includes a face wash (€23), toner (€21) and moisturiser (€35).

More waaather sun block

We all need to take extra care when it comes to the face because it has lots of sticky-out bits that will burn very quickly if we’re not careful. From your ears to your nose, we ALL should be covering up with a high factor, and La-Roche Posay’s Anthelios Face Comfort Cream is a favourite (and Beautie Awards winner) for a reason.

After sun

Now of course Himself didn't follow our instructions above and is now looking at his red hot ham cheeks (all four of 'em) and Aloe Vera has become his best friend.

Life Plan Aloe Vera gel has a high percentage of the plant, while Nivea also have an aloe-based moisturiser that can applied and washed off in the shower to soothe sore spots.

All over body moisturiser

Other parts of the body that get exposed to the sun a lot are shoulders and forearms. Palmer's for Men is a good pick because the packaging is so manly looking that it might pop off to rescue a golden-haired child from a burning building at any moment. And it does the job on dry skin pretty quickly (hellllleeewwww elbows), and it leaves him smelling like cocoa butter. Yum.
