  • How to keep skin hydrated and protected from the sun without running the risk of breakouts

You know well that a sunscreen should be worn all year round, but summer calls for a change up in your beauty routine, adding more layers to tackle different issues, which can lead to breakouts. To avoid this, Olay Principal Scientist, Dr Sian Morris advises to: “Start by making sure you have a good cleansing routine to remove makeup, oil and everyday grime, which will help avoid congestion. Also, even oily skin needs hydration so don’t forget your moisturiser”.

Foundation swimming down your face is not a good look, but celebrity make-up artist Caroline Barnes has the solution. "In summer, to stop your foundation from melting in the heat, choose one that’s oil free as it will be less greasy and have more staying power on your skin."

  • How to choose a facial SPF that's right for you

One of the most common beauty questions asked around this time of year is if SPF15 facial moisturiser is enough in the summer, or do you need a separate sun protection product?

“For every day, a moisturiser with SPF15 is sufficient,” says Olay Principal Scientist, Dr Sian Morris. “The most important thing is to make sure it has both UVA and UVB protection - all of Olay SPF15, and SPF30 moisturisers have broad-spectrum protection, giving you lots of choice. However, if you spend a lot of time outdoors, particularly if that involves energetic activities like running, playing sport or swimming, you’d benefit from using a specific sun protection product that’s water resistant.”

  • How to prevent pigmentation appearing on your face.

Pigmentation can occur any time of year, but it can escalate in summer.  Olay Principal Scientist, Dr Sian Morris recommends you avoid going out in the midday sun and cover up with a hat and sunglasses. “Plus, a daily UV sunscreen is a must," she says. "Try switching your usual moisturiser for one with a broad-spectrum protection of at least 15. If you are already using SPF 15, then up your protection factor to SPF30.”

  • How food can help protect the skin in summer

Eating antioxidants provides some protection against the sun’s rays. Fill up on fruits and vegetables, and drink plenty of green tea for maximum protection for your skin.

  • Why you should wear shades

Light-coloured eyes have more sensitivity to the sun’s rays, but even if you're a brown-eyed girl or guy, you should wear sunglasses when the sun shines. Sun damage to the eyes can cause cataracts and pterygium, which block your vision. To ensure full protection, wear glasses that have 99 or 100% UVA and UVB protection and wrap completely around your eyes.
