Scent for Girlfriends & Wives

If you've only just started seeing each other, why not give your new gal some Romance by Ralph Lauren (€32 30ml)? She'll either be delighted with such a romantic and thoughtful gesture, or run for the hills lest you start talking marriage and babies. I think boys, this is one you'd want to gague carefully. Sarah Jessica Parker's Lovely (€37.50 50ml) might be a better choice. Be warned though, lots of people consider celeb scents to be the height of tacky, so step carefully. Viz Kylie's new scent Darling. You could also indicate your state of mind by getting her Happy by Clinique (€30.50 50ml) - I think that would be adorable! You should have no problem picking up any of those four in your local Boots or a decent chemist, and Strawberrynet will also oblige nicely for Romance, Happy and Darling. [prices are from Strawberrynet, you'll pay more elsewhere]

Been together a while? Why not give her something a bit spicy n' saucy? (L-R below) Agent Provocateur's new scent Maitresse would be perfect. It promises to be "an intoxicating Eau De Parfum epitomising pure seduction, radiating irresistible attraction and ultimate elegance". Oooh! (€68 from BT's). Chanel's Allure Sensuelle (€73.50 50ml) and Estee Lauder Cinnabar are both seductive frangrances, as is Theirry Muglers Angel, (€64 50ml) which is packed full of hints of chocolate, jasmine and patchouli. If you really want to drop a heavy hint, get her Boudoir by Vivienne Westwood (€51 50ml). It's one of the nicest bottles I've ever seen, and it smells of marigold, rose & orange blossom and cinnamon. BT's should be able to oblige for all of these or you can get Angel, Boudoir and Allure Sensuelle from Strawberrynet for even less, as indicated by the prices above.

Does she love having the latest scent (L-R below)? D&G's The One is the big news this Christmas - it's a warm, oriental floral, with modern sensuality. Nina Ricci's new fragrance, Nina, would be worth it for the bottle alone - it's a beautiful pink glass apple with silver leaves. The fragrance itself is apple and citrus scented. Yum! (€55 from BT's & Arnotts). Other hot scents this Christmas are Dior's Midnight Charm (if you can get it - it's a limited edition) and the new Red Delicious by DKNY (€40). Lancome Hypnose is another big one this year as well. It's the 50th fragrance from the House of Lancome and is a sensual yet understated mix of vanilla and vetiver. You'll have to trek to Boots or a department store for these - as they're so new it's unlikely you can let your fingers do the walking this time.

If she's a dedicated follower of fashion you could do worse than get her a Marc Jacobs fragrance, Paul Smith's latest fragrance Floral (fab packaging, girly scent) is highly recommended (by me!), or you could think about one by Stella McCartney, Prada (expensive! Think €80), Viktor & Rolf or Alexander McQueen, all of who do much coveted scents. Any lady who regularly turns the pages of Vogue would really appreciate one of these, I think.

If she's an awful old harridan and you really hate her, why not get her some Poison by Dior? In the immortal words of Lady Astor to Winston Churchill - "Sir, if you were my husband, I would poison your drink", to which he famously replied, "Madam, if you were my wife, I would drink it". Tee hee! Other scents to tell her you really don't care would be Tweed by Lentheric, So by Coty and anything from the Pound Shop. I guarantee you'll have someone new to lavish scent on by next Christmas!
