Yes I KNOW this is a picture of Xtina and not Britters, but to be honest the only pic I could find of Ms Spears with red lippie on was so horrible it wouldn't have been fair to her to broadcast it.

.
Wearing red lipstick is not only a bold and daring look - it's possibly even downright dangerous. The Campaign for Safe Cosmetics has found levels of lead in several of the most loved and popular red lippies - despite there being no mention of this in the ingredients.

Lipstick is like sweets - it is ingested directly into the body. And lead is a very harmful substance when ingested. There's no need for it to be in red lipstick at all either.

Among the brands testing positive for lead were:

  • L'Oréal Colour Riche "True Red" - 0.65 ppm
  • L’Oreal Colour Riche “Classic Wine” – 0.58 ppm
  • Cover Girl Incredifull Lipcolor “Maximum Red” – 0.56 ppm
  • Dior Addict “Positive Red” – 0.21 ppm

*Just as a point of reference the FDA guidelines for lead in sweets is 0.1ppm.
