Why You Should Be Using Honey On Your Skin

Honey isn't just for eating! If you've been in the beauty aisle of any shop recently you'll see it included in almost every other product, but why is it so popular?

Honey has natural anti-bacterial, antiseptic and anti-inflammatory properties. This means it's great for acne, eczema and anti-ageing.

Any old bottle of honey won't work though. In order for you to get effective results, raw and unpasteurised honey such as manuka honey are best to use.

It's most effective because it still contains all of the healthy bacteria and antioxidants found naturally in honey.

How can honey be used on the skin?

Here are just a few of the many ways honey can be used on the skin.

1. Face mask

There are dozens of honey face mask recipes online but my favourite honey face mask is mixing two tablespoons of natural plain yoghurt with one tablespoon of honey.

Leave it on your face for about 20 minutes and then wash it off with a facecloth and your skin will feel nice and hydrated.

2. Spot treatment

The anti-inflammatory properties help to reduce the redness and swelling of acne and the anti-bacterial properties fight the bacteria.

Apply a bit of honey directly onto any breakouts and leave it for 10-15 minutes and then wash it off.

3.  Exfoliator

Honey has natural exfoliating properties that will help remove dead skin cells and brighten your complexion.

You can use raw honey alone or mix it with some brown sugar for a nice face scrub.

If you choose to use honey alone it can be mixed with water so it's easier to apply and you should leave it on the skin for about 5 minutes before washing it off.

4. Fade scars

The antioxidant properties in honey can help repair damaged skin and therefore fade scars.

Apply honey to the desired area and massage it for a few minutes before washing it off. Do this on a regular basis and your scars will begin to fade over time.
