When it comes to elevating an outfit this season, light coats are the most on trend answer

Over the weekend, I wore a coat I had bought last year for the first time. 'Twas a trench coat, y'see, and 'twas the first time I had had the opportunity to wear it.

Trench coats are like avocados; there's only a small window when they're ripe. The weather needs to be warmish but cool enough to warrant a coat. I wore mine on Saturday, and I may as well have been wearing an invisibility cloak. I wore it yesterday, and got just a little bit sweaty. Today, it's juuust right.

By wearing it, I opened up this very conversation. What does one wear over their outfit at this time of year? A leather jacket is always a winner (except of course when it's a fraction too warm. That's when the real sweats settle in). A denim jacket comes in and out of style like that smoker at work who keeps popping in and out for fag breaks (they're not particularly in this year FYI).

A light trench like mine (I got it from ASOS in October for a really good deal) is admittedly very handy, and I'm proud of myself for snapping up such a bargain. I might as well mention that I'm getting loads of compliments for it, too. So, there's that.

This season, the long Kimono will be your best buy. It's the light coats style du jour, and it will last you for some time after. We're entering hand-down-to-your-daughter territory with this one.

The theme for this season's Spring/Summer overcoat is long and elegant. That is why the Duster is another good option. It's lighter than a trench but just as chic.
