Why these 3 foundations deserve to be called classic

Foundation; it is one of those makeup products which can seriously split opinion, and usually that's all down to the fact it's a personal choice as to what coverage someone likes or what suits their skin type.

As we go through our teens, twenties, thirties and beyond, the foundation we use often changes. This could be due to any number of reasons, be it new formulas hitting the market, a recommendation from a friend, deciding to upgrade or invest, feeling the need to shake up your look, etc. What I'm getting at is that it's rare that someone would stick to the same product for more than a few years (but if you have found your soul mate, let us know down in the comments).

That said, there are some foundations which have stood the test of time, proving popular for years and years so I thought I'd look at three classics and revisit how they work, who they work for and why we think they're worth the money.

  • Estee Lauder Double Wear

foundation 1 Collage

This is the go-to foundation for women who love a decent bit of coverage that lasts all day long. It's one that a lot of wedding make-up artists swear by as it gives a flawless finish to skin whether applied using a brush, fingers or a sponge (I prefer brushes, but again, that's a personal choice).

Within the range, there are 38 shades, and although not all of those are stocked in Ireland (yet), there's still a good choice of warm, neutral and cooler tones available. In terms of finish, Double Wear offers a long-wear, semi-matte finish that suits most skin types. (€38)

  • YSL Teint Touche Eclat

foundation 2 Collage

The long awaited foundation version of YSL's cult classic Touche Eclat hit the scene a few years ago and became an instant hit. The formula comes in 22 shades, and thanks to the fact there are no opaque powders, it doesn't cake, it just blends on smoothly to leave skin looking radiant and fresh.

Although it's labeled as being suitable for all skin types, those with combination or oily skin types (like me) may find this goes shiny after a few hours wear; however an oil free primer or good setting powder will help combat that. (€40)

  • MAC Face & Body

This is a staple for makeup artists who work in film as gives a very natural finish to skin, although it is also a "buildable" foundation, which means you can apply it, powder, and re-apply for more coverage if you wish.

It's best applied using your fingers, as when you work/blend it onto the skin it starts to change consistency, becoming thicker. It tends to stay much more liquid in texture if you use a brush. Once it's changed consistency, you start to see it offer more coverage, and that's also when it's become waterproof and transfer resistant, which is handy for our lovely rainy weather! (€31.50)
