Can We Be Blunt? Seven Style Lessons from Emily Blunt

Last week we were girl crushing on Modern Family's Sofia Vergara (not just because she's a style inspiration but also because she's got lots of words of wisdom behind that confident Colombian smile), while this week we're head over heels for Hollywood's go to girl next door, Emily Blunt.

An absolute darling on the chat show circuit (didn't you just love her recent appearance on Graham Norton, taking the proverbial out of Tom Cruise?) and a comedically gifted actress (The Five Year Engagement, The Devil Wears Prada), Miss Blunt has recently carved out a name for herself as quite the sought after action heroine, kicking arse against the aliens in The Edge of Tomorrow. When she's not charming the pants off us on screen, you'll find her name appearing on many a best dressed list for her countless, classic red carpet appearances. If it wasn't obvious by now, we're big fans of John Krasinski's missus, so much so, we might actually want to be her.

In our quest to learn from the bubbly, British Blunt, we take a look back here at some of her sartorial choices.

  • Clash of the Colours

Don't be afraid to clash. Contrary to what most colour guides will tell you, if done right, pink and red can work out. Emily pairs a subtle pink lip (as opposed to some eye-popping bubblegum pink) and soft eyeshadow with a striking red number and it works like magic.

  • Lady in Red

If you're going to go all out with a head turning, full length red dress such as this, go easy on the accessories. Emily gets across her confidence by braving a pink, embellished clutch, while leaving her neck bare. As Miss Blunt knows all too well, less is always more, especially where structured necklines such as this are concerned.

  • The Right Way to Show Some Skin

If you're considering an ensemble in which parts of material have been cut out, make sure you keep it classy. Emily chooses in both red carpet appearances below to expose a small part of her waistline, yet she keeps her bust under wraps. Let's leave a little something to the imagination, shall we?

  • Pretty in Punk

At last year's Met Ball, rather than go all out, Emily chose to indulge her wild side by experimenting with a bright pink eyeshadow - something few of us would pull of on the average Tuesday, but for such an occasion, it's worth having a little fun. If you're going to give a make-up look such as this a go, leave that as the focus of your ensemble, and keep the outfit itself a little more low key.

  • Mellow in Yellow

Even on her down time, Emily has fun with colour. While clearly a fan of laid back black, a flash of neon yellow in your sandals, or trainers if you prefer, can a little life to your look, providing you with an added boost of colour confidence.

  • Playful Patterns

Emily is a sartorial chameleon. Is there anything that doesn't suit her? Below we see her playing up to her rock-chick side while here she looks effortless in a feminine A-Line number, relaxed with pockets at the hips. Whatever you'll find Emily wearing, you can rest assured that comfort and wearability is high up her list of priorities, if she can't wear something with ease, she'll opt for something else. Make sure you do the same.

  • Femme Fatale

If you dare to don some leather, this is how you do it. The angular pattern marries beautifully with the leather skirt, while the sheer material exposes just the right amount of skin for a very sexy yet fashion forward ensemble. Take note, leather lovers, take note.
