Discover your fragrance this Valentine's Day

Most people have received an Eau de Parfum as a present, and most of the time that fragrance has only been opened once. Gifting a scent is a bold move; it's really impossible to know what a person will like unless they tell you themselves. And that's where the other dilemma lies. The scent you choose for yourself is so personal; it has to capture your taste, your style, your essence.

But the journey to learning your perfect fragrance can be overwhelming, especially when can't quite describe the scent you like. Maybe you like a floral scent, but you want it to be fresh. Perhaps you're drawn to masculine scents, but don't want it to be too musky. That's when having an idea of perfume notes comes in handy.

Each scent has top, middle, and base notes.

  • Top Notes: the scents that are evident immediately after you spritz, and fade quickly
  • Middle Notes: the scents that become clear once the top notes begin to fade; the 'heart' of the scent
  • Base Notes: Deeper, richer notes develop over about half an hour

This is why, when testing perfumes, you shouldn't rely on the first sniff. Let the scent linger, and check on it every so often to get the complete idea.

It's also helpful to be aware of the fragrance families. The four main perfume types that make up the 'fragrance wheel' are: Floral, Oriental, Fresh, and Woody. A gorgeous example of a varied fragrance is the universally flattering Terre de Lumière EDP, new to L’OCCITANE. It's "zesty and aromatic at first, but unexpectedly melts into an infinite gourmand heart, before settling into sensual balsamic and musky base notes".

In this addictive fragrance, the contrasts of Provence are captured in an unexpected paradox: the encounter between an aromatic facet and a gourmand heart, making Terre de Lumière the first Gourmand Aromatic fragrance by L’OCCITANE.

  • Terre de Lumière EDP - 50ml €65 / 90ml €89 (available nationwide from 7th February 2017)

Master Perfumer Calice Becker says, “Terre de Lumière plays on the tension between masculine freshness and delicious feminine softness. It’s a very innovative scent, the first gourmand aromatic fragrance from L’OCCITANE, absolutely addictive.”
