3 alternative ways to rock AW16's hottest shade: The red lip

Red lips are always a classic, and this season they're back on trend in a big way. But what if you're afraid of wearing red?

Well, we're here to help, with three alternative ways to wear AW16's hottest shade.

Go Sheer

Lip oils have been one of the biggest new textures to come out this year in the makeup industry. Almost every brand has launched one of their own at this stage from Lancome Juicy Shakers to Essence lips oils and many more in between.

There's one to suit every budget, but the idea is the same; a lip oil offers the hydration and care of a lip balm but the gloss and shine of a traditional lip gloss. Choosing one that has a hint of red is the perfect way to dip your toe in the waters if you're afraid of red. Or looking like a clown. Here I'm wearing Clinique Pop Lip Oil Lip & Cheek Glow in the shade Rose Glow (€20).

Liquid Lipstick

For long wear, there's nothing quite like a matte lip colour. This year we've seen a rise in the number of liquid lipsticks on the market, too. Kat Von D, The Balm and NARS all bring their A-Game with great offerings.

I really like liquid lipsticks. They are sort of like a hybrid between the texture of a traditional lipstick and the look of a matte lipstick. Plus, they're easier to apply thanks to the wand and feel comfortable for longer. Here you can see Catrice's Velvet Matte Lip Cream in RedVolution in action. Looks more expensive than the €3.50 price tag, doesn't it?

Hollywood Vintage

Whenever I think of red lipstick, I think of old-school Hollywood icons such as Marilyn Monroe or Elizabeth Taylor. This is probably why I fell head over heels for this incredible red satin lipstick from Delilah, simply called Vintage (€30). It's SO beautiful and feels like a dream to wear for hours on end.

It's not just the luxury market who do classic reds well, though. Both Rimmel and Bourjois have some beautiful offerings this season. Rimmel's Kate Moss "Retro Red" is one of my favourites.

Are you feeling more emboldened to wear a red this coming winter?
