Skincare can be a little bit of a minefield. Should you double cleanse? Should you always use a serum? Do you still need a moisturiser if you are using a serum?

We get it, it can be confusing. But the truth is, everyone should be using a serum. They are amazing, hydrating and especially great for anti-ageing because of their ability to penetrate the skin.

Here’s everything you need to know:

What exactly is a serum?

A serum is a skincare product that is usually applied after cleansing but before moisturising. Serums have the ability to deliver powerful ingredients to the skin because they are packed full of smaller molecules that can penetrate deeply into the skin. Because of this, they can successfully deliver a high concentration of active ingredients.

Is a serum the same as a moisturiser?

A serum is moisturizing yes but it is one step which is just as important as moisturising. Serum penetrates the skin and gets those ingredients in deep whereas moisturiser creates a barrier on the surface of the skin to keep all those good bit in.

Do you still need a moisturiser?

Moisturisers are and will always be an important part of a skincare routine. Moisturisers also create that barrier to help keep the bad stuff off your skin, like toxins from the outside world. This is why you also need a serum working alongside it to get all those active ingredients in. Moisturizer is vital but so is serum. A serum can show a complete transformation in just a matter of days, it is quite literally plastic surgery in a bottle.

The most important thing to remember is to use serums first, moisturizer second.

How do I use a serum?

Each and every one of our skins react differently, but you should give your skin roughly two months to see how your skin responds to a serum. You may even see results in a week but bear in mind for some it could take 7/8.

You should use a serum all over your face and neck twice a day, morning and evening.
