The amount of plastic and general waste we create with our beauty routines is honestly shocking. Luckily though, there are lots of simple changes we can make to reduce waste in our beauty routines.

Only buy when you need to

Let's face it, we're all guilty of going into Boots or Penneys for a browse only to come out with a bag full of new products to try. If you're anything like me then half of the products you buy you'll end up hating and throwing in the bin.

Make the switch to only buying beauty products when you need to i.e. when you run out of them. This will not only reduce waste but save you money too.

Taking the time to do a bit of research on beauty products before you buy them means that you'll be purchasing products you know you'll love.

Reusable cotton pads

The number of single-use cotton pads an average person goes through in a week is likely high, so switching to reusable ones is an easy switch and a worthwhile investment.

They are readily available to purchase online and many health food shops also stock them.

If the idea of using reusable cotton pads isn't your thing then consider switching to using a cream or oil-based makeup remover which can be used with a face cloth.

Safety Razors

Plastic razors for women are usually expensive and don't give you the best shave, switching to a safety razor will save you money and give you a better shave.

It does take a little time to get comfortable using a safety razor but once you do you'll never go back.

Shampoo and Conditioner Bars

Shampoo and conditioner bars are a very cost-effective way to reduce beauty waste.

I've used shampoo bars in the past and they have lasted me about 3 months, with me using them about two or three times a week.

Lush stock a wide variety of shampoo and conditioner bars so you'll have plenty to choose from, they even sell little metal storage containers for them.

If shampoo and conditioner bars aren't your thing then Lush also sell bottled hair products that are equally amazing.

They have a deal where if you bring back five clean pots or tubes to one of their shops you get a free mask. So you're saving the planet and getting a nice little reward for it too.

Doing your bit for the planet doesn't have to be complicated. What are some other ways you like to reduce waste from your beauty routine?
