The many uses of Apple Cider Vinegar

Apple cider vinegar is a firm staple in most kitchens, but did you know it has many beauty benefits too?

Apple cider vinegar is made from crushing apples and squeezing the liquid out, then adding bacteria and yeast that cause this liquid to ferment.

It has a plethora of uses, from the makings of a salad dressing to a foot scrub.

Here are a few of the many uses of apple cider vinegar:

Apple cider vinegar contains alpha-hydroxy acids which chemically exfoliate the skin and remove dead skin cells to reveal healthy new skin cells. It also has anti-inflammatory properties which help to soothe the skin and the acetic acid helps to soften the skin afterwards.

Treat Acne

Apple cider vinegar contains antibacterial, antifungal and antiviral properties, which means if used correctly it can keep acne-causing bacteria at bay. Because it also removes dead skin cells from the skin it can stop spots from forming too. Apply a small amount to a cotton pad and wipe once over the face or problem areas.

Fights Dandruff

Did you know apple cider vinegar can be used on the scalp? Dandruff happens when the scalp produces too much yeast. Apple cider vinegar reduces the amount of yeast growing on the scalp thus reducing dandruff. Use it with equal parts of water before you shampoo.

Helps prevent bruising

If you get a bruise or feel one might come on, soak a cotton pad with undiluted apple cider vinegar, and secure it with a plaster or medical tape. Leave it on for one hour. Because bruises are caused by blood under the skin as a post-trauma, the anti-inflammatory properties of apple cider vinegar help to dissipate this blood— which can help to speed up healing and reduce bruising.

Right down to your toes

Because of the acid present in the apple cider vinegar, it's very effective at neutralising bad odours. It's also quite helpful when it comes to warts and fungus too. Use 1/4 cup of apple cider vinegar diluted in a small tub of warm water to make your own foot soak.

If you are purchasing apple cider vinegar, try to only go for one that is unfiltered and preferably organic, and one that is cloudy and not clear. These ones will be the most potent.
